If your student comes home talking about how long he or she can plank, you can thank Coach Rush.
We are thrilled to welcome Taylor Rush to SJEDS as our new physical education teacher. Taylor joins us from New Jersey, where he attended McDaniel College and obtained a degree in exercise science with a minor in sports coaching. As a lifelong athlete, physical fitness is ingrained in his way of life and has proven to be a natural career choice. After graduating from college, Taylor worked as a full-time personal trainer and spent some time substitute teaching on the side before deciding to combine two of his passions—fitness and education.
Since the first day of school, Taylor has spent some time getting to know his new students in between serious conditioning and fun games of dodgeball. “The fifth and sixth graders [especially] are so respectful. They are amazing,” he stated.
Taylor uses his degree and experience as an athlete and trainer in educating his students. Not only does he focus on strengthening heart muscles, Coach Rush incorporates team work and strategy through games as well as public speaking, allowing individual students to lead their classmates through warm-ups.
“He’s fun!” stated fifth grader Cole Zaccour. Students have really taken to Coach Rush, and see him up to three times a week for formal physical education. “We’re playing lots of new games we’ve never played before,” added fifth grader Kai Winchester.
Taylor comes from a long line of educators including his grandmother, mother, and two sisters. His mom, Peggy, Lower School Ponte Vedra Beach Campus Head at The Bolles School, is a breast cancer survivor. In honor of his mom, Taylor is growing out his hair to donate to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths program, which makes wigs for women battling cancer. (Learn more about this program.)
During college, Taylor participated in several study abroad programs that allowed him to travel the globe. Highlights of his travels include Rio, Russia, Cuba, Poland, Barbados, and Germany, with Italy, Ireland, and Morocco topping the list. He hopes to continue his love of traveling during summers when he is out of school.
In his spare time, Taylor enjoys surfing, reading, and cheering on his favorite team, the Green Bay Packers. And as a new Florida resident, he says he’d like to take up golf.
