What do you love about SJEDS?
I love our nurturing environment. Yes, we have high academic standards, but the love the children receive at our school can’t be found at other schools nearby.
How long have you been teaching at SJEDS and what motivated you to become a teacher here?
12 years. Being a Jacksonville native, SJEDS has always had a strong reputation for producing academically strong students.
What is your favorite tradition at SJEDS?
Too many to name!! I love that each grade has many of its own traditions… insect reports, president reports, Pioneer Day, 1st/6th grade buddies…
What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?
I love to sing. Music has always been a part of my life. I try to incorporate it into my classroom each day, even in little ways, to liven up the environment and make it a more cheerful place.
How do you nurture and challenge your students through mind, body and spirit?
I set a high standard, academically, for my students. I expect a lot from them, and they always rise to the challenge. While I push my students to reach those expectations, they always know I’m their number one cheerleader. They can count on me to root for them and support them no matter what. Aside from their parents, I am their biggest fan! I tell them on Meet Your Teacher Day that they are allowed to make mistakes and we will learn from them. This gives them a safety net throughout the year so they feel safe and loved.
