Art
At SJEDS, visual arts instruction begins in Pre-K3 and continues through sixth grade, giving students consistent opportunities to build creativity, technique, and artistic confidence over time.
Students explore a wide range of artistic experiences, including:
- Introduction to the elements of art and principles of design, building foundational skills year by year
- Hands-on work with materials such as chalk, oil pastels, tempera, watercolor, and acrylic paints
- Techniques including printmaking, weaving, and perspective drawing
- Exposure to diverse artistic styles and notable artists from different periods and cultures
One of the most meaningful SJEDS traditions begins in first grade, when students create a handcrafted clay figure for the nativity scene. Each year, they add a new piece, building a complete set by sixth grade that serves as a lasting keepsake of their growth and creativity throughout their time at SJEDS.
