Bear Proud! | Kathryn Almond graduated from SJEDS

Bear Proud! | Kathryn Almond graduated from SJEDS in 2018. She was the recipient of the 5th Grade Episcopal School of Jacksonville Book Award, played the lead in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and discovered a love for volleyball right here in our gymnasium. Fast-forward: She is a soon-to-be graduate at ESJ, carrying a 4.3 GPA while playing varsity and club volleyball. Looking ahead: Kathryn received a formal NCAA athletic offer to play indoor volleyball as a Florida Southern College Moccasin. We're #BearProud and look forward to a flourishing collegiate career!

Kathryn is the daughter of proud parents Eric and Hillary Almond and sister to Fenley and Anderson. Congratulations!

Nearly 150 young ladies, daddies, and special love

Nearly 150 young ladies, daddies, and special loved ones danced the night away at the recent Alice in Wonderland soirée, held at the World Golf Village Renaissance Resort. Hosted by our amazing Parent Association, the party was perfect in every way. Attendees enjoyed fave songs led by a D.J., wonderland crafts, and Sweet Pete's candies. Dinner included a prime rib carving station, pasta, veggies, and decadent desserts.

A round of applause goes to veteran P.A. Father-Daughter Dance chair Danielle Caplin for all the love she has instilled in this event over the last several years. She and co-chairs Melanie Markwordt and Julie Jorgenson, along with Zina Midani, Shelly Jones, and Ellen Weaver, all poured hours into ensuring each detail was just right. Thank you to all!

Fourth grade traveled to Crystal River on the Gulf

Fourth grade traveled to Crystal River on the Gulf side of Florida for a unique and exciting opportunity to swim with manatees. Guides ensured students were well-versed in how to passively observe these incredible creatures, in addition to understanding habitat, diet, and anatomy. Our group also enjoyed a scenic nature cruise along the Indian River while learning about regional wildlife and preservation. Our adventurers loved their excursion to the Manatee Capital of the World.

Bear Proud! | Congratulations to Katherine D'Arien

Bear Proud! | Congratulations to Katherine D'Arienzo '19 (pictured center) and her two teammates for being named the North Florida Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Student Visionaries of the Year. For seven weeks, Katherine's group, Team Talon/ESJ, competed against other local high schools to raise money to end blood cancers. Collectively, the schools raised $230,000, and Team Talon raised more than half of that figure, with a winning total of $123,813. We are so proud of Katherine, and all the students who participated in the challenge, both in the area and nationwide. Katherine is the daughter of proud parents Justin and Erica D'Arienzo, and sister to alumni Aiden, Julia, and Liam. #BearProud

Did you know? If grasshoppers were people-sized, they could leap the length of a basketball court! First grade entomologists presented insect reports to family members today. After researching anatomy, life cycle, habitat, and more, each student prepared eye-catching Google slides and models to demonstrate their findings. To celebrate their success, presenters created custom-made, creepy-crawly snacks! (Additional photos posted on Facebook.)

Kindergarteners just returned from a two-week, act

Kindergarteners just returned from a two-week, action-packed excursion to Italy. Highlights from their busy itinerary include a grape stomping party, a pizza making class, and the devouring of an authentic feast. Thank you to all our parent volunteers for assisting! We can't wait for a return trip next year!

Sixth graders experienced the tranquility and spir

Sixth graders experienced the tranquility and spirit of Kanuga and its Mountain Trail Outdoor School, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The annual capstone trip for our soon-to-be graduates strengthened the already extraordinary connections amongst classmates, teachers, nature, and the Creator. Kanuga's experiential science curriculum provided our students with day/night hikes, bog exploration (feet in!), and visits with native animals. The trip to Kanuga is a treasured, long-standing tradition at SJEDS; visiting alumni often fondly reflect upon this pinnacle experience.

SJEDS Bears have been on the go! Third grade trekked north for a tour of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center in Jekyll Island. Students absorbed a wealth of knowledge from field experts while experiencing turtle rehabilitation and ecosystem preservation in action. Thirty-four students in 3rd through 6th grades san

Thirty-four students in 3rd through 6th grades sang "God Bless America" with honor and glory at the opening of yesterday's Jacksonville Icemen hockey game. Music instructor Kathy Dozier reflected, "I'm extremely proud of our performers. They represented SJEDS very well. It was a blessing to share this song with so many at such a large-scale venue."

Special thanks to all the families that joined us for the afternoon, and in turn, supported SJEDS. Thanks too, to the Icemen franchise for this incredible opportunity and for providing a portion of our ticket sales back to our school. (Additional photos posted on Facebook.)
